ReactOS, named after project founder Jason Filby from Oracle to the project, it has its pros and cons. However, ReactOS has continued its development and these accusations have not had any legal act in this regard. Something that, as you will understand, being Windows a closed proprietary system would be illegal. Some developers have thrown stones at the project, claiming that they copied parts of the Windows system, used some original Microsoft system files and that it contained Windows assembly code disassembled and contributed to the project. It also incorporates some parts of the compatibility layer of the well-known Wine project (pronounced "vain"), in this way, you can install native Windows software on this system and it works, although not all software is 100% compatible. 3 Minimum requirements to install ReactOSīasically, your developers work to implement an API, and other elements such as the Windows Registry but open source, for this they reverse engineer the Microsoft product to understand how it works and clone it.It has also been ported to other architectures, not only x86-32, but also for AMD64 and ARM. Although it was originally thought to be compatible with Windows 95 (when the project was called FreeWin95), today it supports software for the Windows NT 5.x and higher kernel, that is, for Windows XP and higher software. ReactOS (React Operating System), where React refers to "reaction" for dissatisfaction with the Microsoft system) arises to create a free system with binary compatibility for Microsoft Windows NT software and drivers. Despite the similarities with Linux, it is not a distribution or a system based on the Torvalds kernel, but uses its own hybrid kernel and a graphical interface called ReactOS Explorer that is reminiscent of the Windows system. It's about operating system developed under the tutelage of the ReactOS Foundation, a project started years ago and released under the GPL and BSD licenses, written almost entirely in the C programming language, free and open source. We have already talked about ReactOS on this blog a few times. Click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner > click Force Quit. This is perhaps the biggest change made to the emulator in recent months, and it's a complete rewrite of the emulator's input system on Android. As if all this were not enough, there are many homebrew ROMs totally free, which you can play legally without any problems.Let's start with the emulator's handling of Android controllers. In addition, it is a project in constant development, as it has been receiving almost daily updates since its first version was released in 2003, so if a particular game does not work properly with one version, the next update may fix that particular problem. If you meet all these requirements, you can enjoy multiplayer like never before.ĭolphin Emulator is, without any doubt, the definitive emulator for Wii and GameCube. The only requirements are that all players have the game in question on their list, have a high-speed Internet connection, and are using the emulator's same version. Thanks to the Netplay function, you can play any GameCube or Wii title with your friends, even if everyone is in their own home or even on the subway. For games that require the use of the Wii Remote, simply use the touch controls of the Android device itself.īack in the day, playing with friends on the same console was the only way to share the experience, but thanks to Dolphin Emulator you can now also do it over the Internet. As expected, you can use your Xbox or Playstation controllers to comfortably play any GameCube game or Wii game that uses the traditional controller. Once you have finished configuring the Dolphin Emulator graphics, you should ideally spend a few minutes configuring the gamepads and other devices. With a high-end device, you will get higher resolutions and better performance, but even with mid-range devices, you can run games at some of the more modest resolutions. The good thing? The emulator is so scalable and offers so many options that, regardless of your terminal, you will most likely be able to play almost all GameCube or Wii titles. The decision, in the end, is yours.Ĭonfiguring the visuals of Dolphin Emulator is a relatively simple process, but it can be quite time-consuming if you want to get the most out of your Android device. All this means, in short, that you will be able to enjoy your games as they looked on their original consoles, but you will also be able to improve them to make them look much better. The emulator also offers many graphic configuration options that will allow you to customize and improve your experience: V-Sync, Shaders, Anti-Aliasing, post-processing effects, and so on. Depending on the size and density of your device's screen, you can enjoy resolutions ranging from 720p to 2K or even 4K. One of the most striking improvements of Dolphin Emulator is its wide range of resolutions. Like the versions for desktop computers (Windows, Linux, and Mac), the emulator will allow you to enjoy many improvements, both graphically and in terms of general features. Dolphin Emulator is a powerful Nintendo Wii and GameCube emulator, completely free and open source, which allows you to enjoy almost the entire catalog for these two consoles on Android devices. But Seward’s generation was already entangled in such questions as whether the best poetry required critical elucidation and whether a broad audience indicated lack of merit or the reverse. Paradoxically, however, as Poovey notes, Wordsworth’s literary reputation depended on the wide sales of inexpensive editions of his poetry (290–98). Poovey concentrates on William Wordsworth’s campaign in the following century to convince the public that poetry had an aesthetic value discernible only to elite readers. 3 In doing so, she participated in a national trend: as Mary Poovey observes in Genres of the Credit Economy, the late eighteenth century witnessed efforts to discriminate between “Literature” and other forms of writing (285–335). Whether viewed as an “amateur” or a “professional,” Seward cherished an exalted notion of the poet and consequently held fellow writers to exacting standards. 2 Finally, my readings of Seward’s Batheaston poems show how their models, structures, and sound effects challenge the twenty-first-century reader while demonstrating the national concerns of provincial literary spheres, such as that at Batheaston, and Seward’s professional perspective as she used patronage for nonfinancial motives. 1 Seward’s career illuminates the distinction between amateurism and professionalism in an era when the latter did not necessarily connote a certain financial condition, gender, or social position. Once she was ready to commit her poems to print publication, she could reasonably hope that she might achieve national recognition, a topic I take up in the next chapter, owing to the wide circulation of books and periodicals. Seward opted to share her early verse in manuscript as well as to perform them at Bath-easton, contexts that informed her poems’ structures, content, and sounds. As Ezell also observes, provincial writers were slow to adopt print publication, often preferring manuscript publication not because they were less skilled but because they were wary of the commercial context or were interested in an interactive readership, among other reasons (121). Seward’s career can be seen as a next-generation version of Alexander Pope’s, which, as Margaret Ezell has reminded us, was typical of a poet’s trajectory in the early eighteenth century in that his poems circulated both in manuscript and print ( Social Authorship, 60–83). I offer several explanations for Seward’s choice to begin her career in Batheaston rather than in London. Seward’s decision to compete in Lady Miller’s poetry contests before seeing her work into print, besides illustrating the nature and values of her poetry, invites us to ponder her relationship to the rapidly evolving profession of writing. They position her as a poet skilled in the century’s principles and techniques, ready to brave contemporary professional criticism. These poems, although neglected when not maligned by later critics, demonstrate that Seward entered the public marketplace as a polished poet, ready to please her anticipated readers. In this chapter, I examine the poems Seward chose to publish in her collected works (1809) from among those she presented to her first, semi-public audience, the guests at Lady Anna Miller’s Batheaston salons.
These inks can be applied with brush, dip pen or airbrush and are widely used by designers, calligraphers and artists as well as illustrators. Today they are formulated from a series of soluble dyes in a superior shellac solution. Winsor & Newton Drawing Inks have been used by illustrators since their introduction by Winsor & Newton in the 1890’s, where the main requirement is brilliance of colour. You’ll also have the reliability that you’ll still be able to read everything you have written down if there is an accident, though the ink will spread out a bit on contact with liquid.Winsor & Newton Drawing Ink Individual Colours. As with any cartridge, they will write a bit drier than the bottled ink, but you will still have the same lovely colour and flow. Where the rest of the inks on this list only come in the form of bottles, Graf ink also comes in international standard sized cartridges, which might be a good option if your spills tend to happen when you’re off adventuring in places that you can’t take bottles. They are a relatively balanced ink that can lean to the wet side in a wider nib, but they are luxuriously well behaved inks overall. These inks are water resistant, and no matter which colour you choose it will run rich and saturated. You can choose from various blues like Gulf Blue or Royal Blue, rich reds like India Red or Garnet Red, or even the crowd favourite professional Stone Grey. Of all of the inks on this list, Graf von Faber Castell has the greatest variety of colours. What’s your favourite permanent ink? Let us know in the comments! Inks that are safe for fountain pens will always say so on their packaging. But in the same way that water won’t budge your permanent ink on the page, it won’t budge the dried ink in your pen either! Try to make sure that you use your permanent inks regularly so they don’t dry, and be sure to clean them out thoroughly before storing them if you know you won’t be using them for a while.įinally, remember to never use any India ink or dip pen ink in your fountain pen, no matter how tempting it is! These inks have a totally different composition from fountain pen ink, and the particles are so thick and large that they can clog your pen beyond repair. If a dye-based ink dries in your pen, you’ll likely be able to remove it with the right amount of water in the feed to break up the particles. Adding more water will misalign the ratio, spreading out the dye, and making your hard work a big mess.įor this same reason, you just have to be a little more careful with your pen maintenance with a permanent ink inside. It really does happen to the best of us! Hopefully the notes, dates, and memories were easily dried and legible, but one bad dip off the dock is enough to send any fountain pen lover looking for a permanent ink!īelieve it or not, there are inks that are safe for fountain pens and also stand up to liquidy mistakes! What makes a fountain pen ink stand up better to spills is all in what it’s made of-or, rather, what it isn’t made of! Most fountain pen inks are dye-based, meaning that they have little particles of dye suspended with the right ratio of water for you to both see the colour and get a lovely flow. But Age of Ash is a subtler experience, one which slowly worms its way into your brain until you can’t stop thinking about it. With Daniel Abraham at the wheel, all that should basically go without saying. Oh, it’s a fantastic book, well-written, expertly plotted, and filled with vivid settings and fleshed out characters. They read almost like tentpole movies simple prose, straight-forward if exciting plots, reveals that make you shout, “I knew it!”, and so on. Some books beat you over the head with their awesomeness, pulling you through pulse-pounding action scenes and constantly upping the stakes until you feel like you’re going to pull your hair out from how tense the proceedings have grown. Trust us, you don’t want that.Īge of Ash by Daniel Abraham. This is a spoiler-free review, so read on without fear of having this book’s twists ruined. We’re going to tell you a bit about that, as well as why we loved this book so much below. It’s the first book in a new series called The Kithamar Trilogy, which explores fantasy in a way we’ve never quite seen before. Martin, and far too many other works to go about listing here.Ībraham’s latest book, Age of Ash, marks his return to writing epic fantasy novels on his own after his long and successful stint coauthoring The Expanse. Hanover, various novellas, collaborations with George R.R. He’s finished two epic fantasy series to date: The Long Price Quartet and The Dagger and the Coin, as well as written a Star Wars tie-in novel, a series of urban fantasy books under the pen name M.L.N. Corey alongside fellow author Ty Franck, but he’s got plenty of other books out there as well. These have some great world building and utilize slower than light travel.Daniel Abraham may be best known these days for his work on The Expanse, which he writes under the pseudonym James S.A. It is very different from Red Rising but I couldn't put the books down just like I couldn't put Red Rising down. The Hyperion Cantos (four novels) is absolutely fanatic. It showcases the pain of war but still has a significant amount of action. It was written by a Vietnam vet in response to Starship Troopers glorification of war. The Forever War if you're looking for something deeper. It's not the hunger games style like Red Rising and dips quite a bit into how good a fascist society could be (Heinlein was an interesting guy) but still has good battles. A large portion of the book is actually set during the main character's military training. The Iron Rain is very similar to how the Troopers fight in Starship Troopers. Starship Troopers, one of my favorite novels, the opening chapter is intense, and clearly influenced Red Rising. But be warned, the later books get a bit trippy. I recommend the original six by Frank Herbert. There is a fourth book, Zoe's Tale, which is a retelling of The Last Colony that I haven't read and has mixed reviews.ĭune, of course, for grand scale and hand to hand combat. Old Man's War, The Ghost Brigade, and The Last Colony are similar in some key ways. If you get it wrong, the ions get all tangled up with each other in your final diagram. You might have to practice a bit to get the placement of the two squares right. Now draw an identical square behind this one and offset a bit. The pattern repeats in this way over countless ions. You must remember that this diagram represents only a tiny part of the whole sodium chloride crystal. Sodium chloride is described as being 6:6-co-ordinated. By chance we might just as well have centred the diagram around a chloride ion - that, of course, would be touched by 6 sodium ions. The sodium ion in the centre is being touched by 6 chloride ions. Only those ions joined by lines are actually touching each other. We normally draw an "exploded" version which looks like this: This diagram is easy enough to draw with a computer, but extremely difficult to draw convincingly by hand. If you look at the diagram carefully, you will see that the sodium ions and chloride ions alternate with each other in each of the three dimensions. That is different from, say, a water molecule which always contains exactly 2 hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom - never more and never less.Ī small representative bit of a sodium chloride lattice looks like this: There could be billions of sodium ions and chloride ions packed together, or trillions, or whatever - it simply depends how big the crystal is. It means that you can't state exactly how many ions there are. You should be clear that giant in this context doesn't just mean very large. So sodium chloride (and any other ionic compound) is described as having a giant ionic structure. Compounds like this consist of a giant (endlessly repeating) lattice of ions. Sodium chloride is taken as a typical ionic compound. How the ions are arranged in sodium chloride The structure of a typical ionic solid - sodium chloride It isn't important for understanding this page, however. Note: If you need to revise how ionic bonding arises, then you might like to follow this link. It also explains why caesium chloride has a different structure from sodium chloride even though sodium and caesium are both in Group 1 of the Periodic Table. This page explains the relationship between the arrangement of the ions in a typical ionic solid like sodium chloride and its physical properties - melting point, boiling point, brittleness, solubility and electrical behaviour. |
